• Relocate was originally a lift-and-shift of entire Virtual Machines (VMs) and their payloads from data centers to the cloud versions of the same data centers, ensuring minimal environmental disruption. It still applies to many on-prem to cloud migrations, but for cloud-to-cloud migrations, relocation also covers moving containerized payloads and managed platforms across cloud providers.  

• Replatform is when the application being migrated is optimized for the target cloud environment, though the core logic and structure remain the same. The target cloud is configured as well. 

• Refactor or rearchitected is when the application or workload being migrated is extensively redesigned for maximum cloud-native benefits. 

• Repurchase is when an existing application is replaced by a cloud-native, managed alternative.  

• Retire is when an application is decommissioned because it’s no longer operationally or economically viable. 

• Retain, refers to making the strategic decision to keep an application in its current environment.
