Unlikely victory is a familiar story\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n

It\u2019s the premise of almost every famous sports <\/span>story<\/span>:<\/span> A new coach inspires<\/span> a <\/span>ragtag group of <\/span>players<\/span> to <\/span>unify and <\/span>overcome <\/span>a team <\/span>that <\/span>was thought to be<\/span> superior<\/span>.<\/span> Leading up to<\/span> the 1980 <\/span>Winter <\/span>Olympics,<\/span> the Soviet national hockey team was thought to be invincible, having won five out of the last six gold medals<\/span> and fresh off a <\/span>do<\/span>m<\/span>inating <\/span>win <\/span>against the <\/span>NHL All<\/span> Stars<\/span>. <\/span>The American<\/span> team was<\/span> a bunch of <\/span>c<\/span>ollege kids<\/span>, but <\/span>coach <\/span>Herb Brooks<\/span> had a <\/span>strategy<\/span>. He set out to create <\/strong><\/span>a new culture\u00a0within the\u00a0<\/strong>team<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>and form<\/span> a band of brothers who <\/span>were <\/span>willing to push themselves to the limits for their <\/span>teammates<\/span>. The strategy worked and the amateur American team <\/span>pr<\/span>eva<\/span>iled in what is now known as the Miracle on Ice<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 a<\/span> tribute<\/span> to<\/span> the power of culture to <\/span>outmatch<\/span> individual <\/span>talent.<\/span><\/p>\n

Twelve<\/span> years later, i<\/span>n a pre-Olympics tune-up match<\/span>, <\/span>a cohesive<\/span> team of college kids challenged the so-called <\/span>Drea<\/span>m<\/span> Team<\/span> on the basketball court<\/span>. On that day<\/span>,<\/span> a disciplined group of little<\/span>–<\/span>known college players beat a cohort of<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0NBA superstars <\/strong>that included<\/span> Michael Jo<\/span>rdan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Karl Malone, and Charles Barkley<\/span>.<\/span> I<\/span>t was once again a reminder of the power of\u00a0<\/span>great teams<\/span>, unified by a winning culture, to beat\u00a0<\/span>great<\/span> individuals<\/span>; a reminder that <\/span>a group can be<\/span> greater than the sum of its parts<\/span> (<\/span>Aristotle<\/span>\u2019s principle)<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The ideal, of course, is to <\/span>build <\/span>a great team <\/span>from a foundation of <\/span>great individual talent<\/span> but <\/span>the principle <\/span>still remains<\/span>, and it applies to every discipline: the outcome of a group effort is highly influenced by the chemistry of the group.<\/span> M<\/span>anagement guru, Peter Drucker<\/span>, probably<\/span>\u00a0put it best when he said, \u201c<\/span>Culture eats strategy for lunch<\/strong>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1992, the Dream Team learned th<\/span>at<\/span> lesson from an embarrassing defeat and they went on to win the gold medal.
