authorized to let an agent act, and on whose behalf?<\/strong><\/p><p>Deloitte research finds that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deloitte.com\/content\/dam\/assets-zone3\/us\/en\/docs\/services\/consulting\/2026\/state-of-ai-2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">74%<\/a> of organizations plan to adopt agentic AI within the next two years, but just 1 in 5 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deloitte.com\/content\/dam\/assets-zone3\/us\/en\/docs\/services\/consulting\/2026\/state-of-ai-2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">(21%)<\/a> currently have a mature enough governance model in place for AI agents. As enterprises turn to agentic AI to automate tasks and workflows, authorization is becoming a question of governance, accountability, and ultimately, organizational design.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-31f56b4 indigo-h2 section-title-margin-bottom elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"31f56b4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" id=\"accountability\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">AI Autonomy creates an accountability problem<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f81827d section-head-margin-bottom elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f81827d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Enterprises already understand authorization when it comes to people. An employee has a defined role, and that role determines what they can access and see, as well as what decisions they can make, and when approval is needed from someone else. There are managers, policies, access controls, audit trails, and escalation paths around that employee.<\/p><p>Agentic AI requires a similar structure. The problem is that organizations can move from experimentation to agent deployment faster than they establish these boundaries. Less than half of CISOs are confident they can centrally control what agents can access (46%) or authorize what individual agents can do (45%), according to an Okta survey.<\/p><p>A team identifies a promising use case, <a href=\"\/artificial-intelligence\/ai-integration-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">connects an agent to enterprise systems<\/a>, gives it access to tools and data, and focuses on whether it can successfully complete the task. But accelerating deployment can come at the cost of ignoring the question of whether an agent should be allowed to complete that task independently in the first place.<\/p><p>This becomes even more important as agents move beyond providing information and begin taking consequential actions. An agent may technically be capable of processing a request, modifying a system, or initiating a transaction. However, if an AI agent makes a decision that has negative consequences, the enterprise cannot simply hold the agent accountable. Stopping or replacing the agent does not resolve the underlying business consequences.<\/p><p>This is why every production agent needs <strong>a clear human or <a href=\"\/blog\/understanding-agentic-ai-adoption\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">organizational owner<\/a>.<\/strong> That does not mean a person must approve every individual action. Doing so would undermine much of the value of autonomous systems. It means the enterprise has defined who is responsible for the agent\u2019s mandate, permissions, performance, risk thresholds, and escalation rules.<\/p><p>The greater the potential impact of an action, the clearer that ownership needs to become. For example, a low-risk agent may be permitted to perform routine actions autonomously, while higher-risk decisions may need human approval, and certain actions may need to be prohibited altogether. The appropriate model depends on the use case, the data involved, regulatory requirements, and the consequences of getting a decision wrong. This is <strong>authorization as an operating model<\/strong>, not simply an access-control setting.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7051f6a indigo-h2 section-title-margin-bottom elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7051f6a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" id=\"governance\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Governance has to become part of the architecture<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8d6b546 section-head-margin-bottom elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8d6b546\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>One of the mistakes enterprises can make is treating governance as something to address after an agent has already been built. That approach becomes increasingly difficult as agentic systems grow more interconnected and autonomous.<\/p><p>Governance and security should be <strong>part of the design and architecture from the beginning.<\/strong> Teams need to determine what data an agent can access, which tools it can invoke, which actions it can take independently, what requires approval, and how its activity will be logged and monitored.<\/p><p>They also need mechanisms for <a href=\"\/blog\/enterprise-ai-agent-security-lessons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">changing or revoking those permissions<\/a> when conditions change. This is even more important in <a href=\"\/blog\/building-enterprise-ai-agent-frameworks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">multi-agent environments<\/a>. If several agents can delegate work, exchange information, and trigger one another\u2019s actions, organizations need to understand how authority moves across the system.
